- Sun Open Storage for Enterprise Storage Needs
- Lower Cost, Greater Flexibility than Proprietary Storage Solutions The Sun white paper “Sun Open Storage: A Lower-cost, Higher Performance Alternative for the Enterprise” argues that the high cost and inherent lack of flexibility of proprietary enterprise storage solutions lends compelling appeal to Sun’s Open Storage offerings. Using industry-standard components and open-source software, open storage enables enterprises to build highly scalable, reliable, and flexible storage systems to fit the
- Starting remote X applications
- Someone has posted a script to start a remote xterm on BigAdmin which exposes a number of issues I thought it would be better if google stood some chance of finding a better answer or at least an answer that does not rely on inherently insecure settings. Remote X applications should be started using ssh -X so that the X traffic is encrypted and if you add -C compressed which can be a significant performance boost. So a script to do this could be handy although to be honest knowing the ssh op

- More OpenSolaris updates
- As I have lived with OpenSolaris I've got used to the updates occuring automatically as you would with most modern Operating Systems. What is a real joy is that it creates a new boot environment for the updates so in the event that one was toxic you can always just roll back. It also gives you a handy reference as to how many updates you have done. Number 13 has just happened for me: cjg@brompton:~$ beadm list BE Active Mountpoint Space Policy Created --
- Sun Support Resources for System Administrators
- The new BigAdmin Support Resource Center covers Sun services and solutions of interest to sys admins, such as different support scenarios for the Solaris OS and OpenSolaris OS. For another perspective on our Support hub, see Rick's latest entry in the BigAdmin blog .
- Sun’s New Network Architecture - VeriScale
- For a Scalable, Elastic, Self-provisioning Datacenter Sun’s Mikael Lofstrand defines the principles of a new Sun network architecture called VeriScale and demonstrates how it meets the requirements of elasticity, scalability and five other detailed conditions making it ideal for a modern, self-provisioning datacenter. In a soon to be released Sun BluePrints that Lofstrand is authoring and sharing on his blog, he defines the VeriScale architecture including its functional components, its nontradi
- Compiling rTorrent on openSolaris
- As I mentioned in a previous post , I’ve recently upgraded a PC to the latest opensolaris release, and had to port some of the applications over. One of these is the fast and efficient rtorrent client. I did not find recent packages in the repositories and had to compile it myself. I found that a future version of opensolaris may have the client integrated, and a case for the SFW consolidation was recently submitted by Huawei Zhang with all the required patch included. The first step in
- NEW: Immutable Service Container Podcast
- Things have certainly been busy around here lately! Over the last two months, we have announced the Immutable Service Container project, published an OpenSolaris -based ISC Construction Kit (Preview) and a corresponding pre-configured OVF image , shared a number of network architecture and autonomic security models leveraging the ISC concept, and even published an ISC Technical Overview presentation. Well, as it turns out, we are not done yet! A few weeks back, I received an i
- Perayaan Software Freedom Day 2009
- No ZFS in Snow Leopard ?
- Now that the shipping date for Snow Leopard is approaching, I came to the realization that I will not get rid of my Solaris based NAS. It’s been running flawlessly for the past 2 or 3 years (well, I lost several disks and a controller, but never lost any data), but I was hopping to consolidate everything on a Mac Pro with 8 cores. Since ZFS is not going to be there, and this apparently until the next major release, I will likely upgrade my PC to a better setup in order to keep running ZFS. Eve
- End of Life Plans for Solaris Express Community Edition
- Sun is announcing the intent to discontinue production of the Solaris Express Community Edition (SXCE) by the end of October timeframe. For more information, see the OpenSolaris announcement: end-of-life plans . Dave Miner's blog offers more information: SXCE Coming to a Close .
- File notification in OpenSolaris - and a bit of shell internals
- A reasonably frequently asked question for people porting apps to OpenSolaris is about file notification events. Linux has inotify for doing this. OpenSolaris has a generic port event system. The port_create(3C) and port_associate(3C) man pages describe this. However they don't have what I'd consider the simple example that is likely to be of interest to people familar with the Linux inotify system. So when the question came up on opensolaris-code@opensolaris.org again I decide

- Still Reviewing Web Pages
- I'm still reviewing web pages in preparation for the migration of opensolaris.org to XWiki . So far I've finished reviewing the ON Developer Reference and the SCM-related pages in the Tools web space. The only thing left for (my) review is the SCM Migration project web space. Since that project is no longer active, I don't plan to look too carefully. But a sanity check does seem in order, and maybe there are some obsolete pages or attac
- verexec(1): A simple execute-most-recent-version utility
- We've published three of the approximately-six-monthly distribution releases now, and we're starting to refine pkg (5)'s capabilities to handle automatically an ever larger set of configuration scenarios. (Read: "edge cases".) Bart implemented actuators in 2008.11, and that let us handle any resource that could be configured or reconfigured via an smf (5) service instance. In future releases, we'll build out the set of instances that handle standard configuration. In this post, I'd
- Pushing a Broom for the AFL/CIO
- The hardest part about working at Sun is all the stuff you have to leave undone. It's like strolling through Great America theme park without enough tickets to do all the rides. Actually, it's like having enough tickets, but not enough time. And at lunch time you have to give somebody else the tickets you think will be left over, and watch them enjoy the rides you had your heart set on. The hardest thing about pushing a broom for the AFL/CIO was enduring the tedium. Push the dust. Pu
- Cleaning
- I am spending a bunch of time cleaning up and organizing the content I maintain in various places across opensolaris.org to get ready for the website transition to XWiki in the fall. On most pages I am just fixing my badly formatted HTML or TML so our migration scrips don`t choke on my stuff, but in some cases I am just deleting the page entirely. Much more efficient that way, don`t you think? I am actually deleting a significant minority of content, though. Unfortunately. I had hoped to toast m
- OpenSolaris 2009.06 pkg Repository Setting Howto

- Setting up an OpenSolaris pkg repository mirror
- Downloading OpenSolaris packages from pkg.opensolaris.org is extremely slow, at least here in Germany. As we were planning to upgrade our OpenSolaris boxes from 2008.11 to 2009.06 during a downtime, we needed a significant speedup. Package Repository Mirrors Fortunately, it’s pretty simple to setup a mirror yourself. Just grab the 7.2 GB disk image of the complete repository (from a OpenSolaris mirror nearby), copy it to your harddrive and get the preinstalled pkg server running. Then yo
